SÃO PAULO (Metal-Pages) 19-Mar-2010. The week bought something of mixed bag of news for the minor metals sector, those that supply it and in the economies they depend on. As the United Kingdom digested better-than-expected employment figures, Nissan said construction of its advanced lithium-ion battery plant, announced in 2009, will begin next month, as it revealed the electric LEAF model will be built at Sunderland, northeast England. The battery plant, which is expected to create around 500 jobs, will have a production capacity of 60,000 units a year. It is scheduled to begin manufacturing batteries for both Nissan and partner Renault in 2012.
